Frequently asked questions
Most WA farm workshops range from 15–30m span and 24–56m length. The ideal size depends on the number and size of machines you plan to service indoors, and whether you want separate areas for tools, parts storage and office space.
A practical AUSPAN-style layout may include:
- A central service area large enough for your biggest machine.
- A dedicated tool and parts room.
- A wash bay near one end or side of the shed.
- A mezzanine for storing parts, tyres and smaller items.
A 150mm reinforced slab is typical for farm workshops, with thicker local pads where hoists or particularly heavy loads will be placed.
Yes. Insulating the roof (and sometimes the walls) greatly improves working comfort in hot or cold weather, reduces condensation and helps protect tools and equipment from moisture.
Most AUSPAN workshop sheds include:
- 240V outlets throughout for power tools.
- 3-phase power for welders, compressors, hoists and other heavy equipment.
- Adequate LED lighting and emergency lighting where required.
- Natural ventilation via ridge vents and wall louvres.
- Mechanical extraction (fans) for welding and painting areas.
- Adequate openings for crossflow ventilation.
A fully functional AUSPAN farm workshop with concrete slab, power, lighting and basic plumbing typically ranges from $300,000 to $700,000+, depending on size, specification, location and the extent of fit-out required.
A mezzanine is a way to increase storage for parts, tyres and smaller equipment without increasing the shed footprint. Ensure the mezzanine location does not obstruct large door openings or crane/hoist operations.
Most AUSPAN farm workshops have at least two or three sliding doors at the front depending on the size of the workshop, often more, as multiple doors allow flexible access. A typical workshop would also have a door at the back for drive-through capability and better airflow when doors are open.
Yes. A workshop should have appropriate fire safety equipment, including:
- Fire extinguishers rated for likely hazards.
- Fire blankets.
- Clearly marked emergency exits and pathways.
- Safe storage for fuels, oils and chemicals.
