Grain sheds rely on good ventilation, appropriate grain moisture levels and well-sealed floors and walls to limit moisture ingress. An AUSPAN grain shed with a proper concrete floor, push-up walls and adequate airflow can maintain grain quality effectively when grain is stored at the correct moisture level.
Standard grain sheds do not need to be airtight. They are designed as ventilated structures. Airtightness is only required when a fumigation system designed for sealed storage is being used, which involves specialty design and construction.
Ideally, no. Fertiliser generally attracts moisture and can also negatively affect grain quality. If both must be stored in the same overall building, use segregated, well-lined concrete bays and separate access points.
A reinforced concrete floor, typically 150mm thick, is recommended. The finish should be smooth enough to run a loader bucket along.
Yes, many existing sheds can be upgraded for grain storage. Common modifications include adding push-up walls, installing a concrete floor, improving cladding and sealing, and upgrading ventilation.
