The overall experience with AUSPAN has been terrific — everything went to plan from start to finish. The design works perfectly for our road trains, and the quality of the build is outstanding. Their professionalism and unique roof-lift system really set them apart. I couldn’t be happier and would 100% recommend AUSPAN.

AUSPAN made the whole process really easy for us. They were quick to respond, gave us clear cost estimates whenever we looked at changes, and guided us through what would work best. We ended up with a four-court stadium the kids absolutely love — and we’re now the envy of other associations.

This project really showcases what’s possible when modern dairy technology meets local shed-building expertise. From early planning through to completion, we focused on creating a structure that not only fit Mark’s operational needs but also future-proofed his investment.
With a 50-metre lean-to for added functionality and 38 metres of ridge ventilation, the end result is a purpose-built, high-performance dairy shed—strong, efficient, and designed to last.
Isaac Smith
The overall experience was easy, really. Once we’d determined the size and design, the process was seamless, and I was kept informed the whole way through. The quality of the materials is outstanding — it’s a substantial structure that’s built to last. Every time I drive past, I feel proud knowing it’s something that’ll stand strong for years.

Frequently asked questions
- Timber grating is a traditional and proven option with good drainage and hoof grip.
- Composite grating is the new style, which is chemical-resistant, UV-rated, fire-retardant, and also reduces maintenance.
Effective sheep flow design includes:
- Smooth, one-directional movement from yards to catching pens, board and then to the wool room or outside.
- Wide, non-slip raceways and minimal sharp turns or bottlenecks.
- Catching pens located close to the stands to minimise the dragging distance.
Bright, shadow-free lighting is essential. LED lighting with 300–400 lux at the shearing board is a common target, with careful placement to minimise shadows on the sheep. Skylights are also used as lighting for the pen areas, but are not recommended as the only lighting for the shearing board.
Wool room space is often designed with a similar footprint to the shearing board area, plus allowance for skirting tables, bale storage and the wool press. The exact requirement depends on the volume of wool and the workflow preferred by the grower and shearers.
- Front-fill catching pens: Sheep enter the catching pen from the front, near the stand. This typically results in a shorter drag distance for the shearer and can improve efficiency.
- Back-fill catching pens: Sheep enter the catching pen from behind the stand. This can suit certain layouts or site constraints, but may involve longer drag distances.
Good ventilation is essential to keep shearers and sheep comfortable and to manage dust and odour. AUSPAN designs generally include:
- Ridge vents to release hot air.
- Wall louvres or shearing shutters to promote crossflow ventilation.
- Adequate openings at eaves or gables for natural airflow.
