Overview/brief

Nexus Recycling is Western Australia’s only used lead acid battery recycling plant and has only commenced operations in 2022. A new building was required that would allow the firm to extract approximately 97% of lead acid battery materials including acid, plastics and metallic lead. The maximum processing capacity of the plant is 43 MT per annum.

Nexus Recycling faced unique challenges: stringent council approvals on limited land, COVID‑19 impacts, and a steep gradient affecting construction.

Solution

Concept Driven

AUSPAN used 3D design concept drawings to clearly communicate a tailored building solution that met Nexus Recycling’s strict requirements.

Extensive internal civils including concrete plinths, bunded areas, and lead containment.
Unique fire prevention features that are relevant to a battery recycling plant.
Overlapping 13m high sliding doors on the front of both buildings to create a 20m wide opening to enable easy manoeuvring of boats in and out.
Retaining walls that allow the building to get right up to the boundary.
