This project really showcases what’s possible when modern dairy technology meets local shed-building expertise. From early planning through to completion, we focused on creating a structure that not only fit Mark’s operational needs but also future-proofed his investment.
With a 50-metre lean-to for added functionality and 38 metres of ridge ventilation, the end result is a purpose-built, high-performance dairy shed—strong, efficient, and designed to last.
Isaac Smith
The overall experience was easy, really. Once we’d determined the size and design, the process was seamless, and I was kept informed the whole way through. The quality of the materials is outstanding — it’s a substantial structure that’s built to last. Every time I drive past, I feel proud knowing it’s something that’ll stand strong for years.
Mark Conley
“The dealings we have had with AUSPAN have been really good. I wouldn’t hesitate on calling them again to put up another shed for us in the future.”
Kirk Jeitz
“The whole process was seamless. I definitely would recommend AUSPAN; they are serious shed builders I think they have done a fantastic job!”
Christian Siemer (Wags)
“It was a very simple process to say this is the size and dimensions and then the guys at AUSPAN put that into motion and had it designed and built for us in no time. Made the decision to build a hay shed and had it standing within 8 weeks.”
Sam Macnamara
“Some of what AUSPAN add to their sheds are other peoples optional extras which end up costing the same amount anyway.”
Wayne Pech
“Very happy with how everything went. We were kept informed on how all was being done as project went along. All options were put forward to work out what was the best shed for us. Was very happy with how quick and detailed quoting was done. Wasn’t left wondering about anything. The shed has paid for itself in 2 years!”
Steve Atwell
“Overall experience I would rate as very good, they were very adaptable to challenges we had at the time. They were very easy to work with. The shed is very good, it has no structural issues and it has made our storing of machines very easy.”
David Imberti
“What they said they were gonna do they followed through on it there were no if’s or buts. What they said they stuck to and that’s the way I like business to be done. We signed the contract one day a fortnight later the shed was here and 3 days later it was built.”
Keith Pocock
“I totally recommend AUSPAN to anybody that is contemplating building a shed. I find that their strength, structure and quality of materials and workmanship is totally flawless.”

Frequently asked questions
Storing hay in an AUSPAN hay shed significantly reduces weather-related spoilage. Outdoor storage can lose 20–30% of hay value through rain damage, UV exposure and mould growth.
Undercover storage can reduce losses to around 2–5%, delivering better feed quality and return on investment.
Most WA hay sheds are designed as open-front sheds to maximise airflow, ease of access and cost-effectiveness. Enclosed hay sheds can be dangerous if adequate ventilation is not provided, due to moisture in the hay creating hay fires.
Typical hay shed heights range from 7m to 9m. This allows stacking of large square or round bales, while also providing sufficient clearance for loaders and telehandlers.
- Compacted gravel or limestone is the most common and cost-effective floor for hay sheds.
- Concrete may be used where the shed will also serve as a machinery or fertiliser storage area and a hard surface is required.
- Keep bales off the ground where possible, using a covering, e.g. rubber, or a well-drained gravel base.
- Maintain good airflow between stacks and avoid packing hay too tightly against walls.
- Only store hay that is adequately cured and not excessively wet to reduce the risk of mould and spontaneous combustion.
Yes. Spontaneous combustion can occur if hay is baled and stored too wet, generating internal heat. Good ventilation, proper curing of hay before storage and regular monitoring are essential. AUSPAN designs allow adequate clearances and can incorporate fire safety considerations as needed.
Distances vary by local government, but many shires prefer hay sheds to be located 10–30 metres away from other major buildings or dwellings to reduce fire risk and facilitate access for firefighting if needed. Always check the relevant local requirements.
Gutters are strongly recommended. They help control roof runoff, minimise splash-back moisture around the base of the hay and provide opportunities for rainwater harvesting for stock or general farm use.
AUSPAN commonly designs hay sheds with spans of 18m, 21m, 24m, 28m and 30m. The ideal span depends on bale size, stacking pattern and loader manoeuvring space. Wider spans can provide more flexible stacking and have fewer bales open to the elements.
Yes, many AUSPAN hay sheds are designed as dual-purpose structures that also house machinery. For safety, it is good practice to keep machinery separated from hay stacks where possible and to consider fire breaks, clearances and appropriate insurance cover.
